So you might have noticed that I don’t write blogs as often as I used to. One reason is because I have a fear of spammers. Yes, every time I put a new post up, I am bombarded with spam. Dozens and oftentimes hundreds of spam comments from creepy places that sell video chats with Russian girls or YouTube videos or facebook profiles or knockoff Nikes from China, flood my inboxes. I am so tired of double-deleting spam; first from my Google email and then from my WordPress. It makes me want to scream. And I’m not a screamer. I’m more of a Calamity Jane type. I’d shoot’em full of holes if I could but the Internet makes that impossible. Sadly.
Spammers, trolls, and angry people in general have taken over the Internet and made it a very uncomfortable place to hang out and have a conversation. Spammers are like litterbugs at the park. They throw their dirty garbage all over the place and make other people clean up after them. Trolls are… well, like trolls. They hang out under the bridge and love to bully and threaten anyone who tries to cross. The angry people are the millions of out-of-work citizens who have way too much time on their hands and no job. So they click from Yahoo, to Google, to blogs and news stories and leave angry tirades on every open comment forum. They are the ones with thousands of thumbs up and thumbs down beside their comments, depending on the site and normal readership.
So, I’ve learned to stay clear of most forums and never leave a comment that could be construed as controversial to anyone. Which means, “Never leave a comment,” because some one will invariably misconstrue what you say and come back at you with a blistering tongue lashing.
I remember a kinder, gentler time in America when people waved hello, spoke with strangers in the street, and helped their neighbors without being asked.
Today in the Internet ‘hood, you’ll get ganged up on by a pack of rabid hyenas and eaten alive if you make the mistake of entering their domain. Beware! Don’t make a sound. Get out while you still can. The beasts are snapping at your heels.
If you are braver than most, leave a comment. I’ll try not to delete it accidentally in the tidal wave of spam coming my way…
